Reaching Out is a monthly show on Soho Radio hosted by Mercury Award-nominated international Hip-Hop artist Ty. With 4 classic albums to his name and a list of collaborators that includes De La Soul, Tony Allen, Roots Manuva and Speech from Arrested Development, Ty will be sharing music that inspires, soothes and energises. Renowned for his musicality and lyricism in equal measure, Tru Thoughts recording artist Ty is just at home performing sell-out shows at London’s Jazz Café or headlining Tongue-Fu spoken word shows.
He set up the legendary Ghetto Grammar Hip-Hop workshops in the ‘90s and is a regular contributor to Akala’s Hip-Hop Shakespeare sessions. Ty’s involvement with Hip-Hop and education brought him into contact with Darren Chetty, one of the growing band of teachers and educators involved in the ‘Hip-Hop Education’ movement, who joins him on the show.
‘Reaching Out’ – To communicate, to interact, to get in touch. Two presenters, plus guests, and an audience – expect interaction!
Reaching Out beyond musical boundaries. We’ll play Hip-Hop old and new because we love Hip-Hop old and new but we appreciate that Hip-Hop grew out of DJs who reached out musically and threw funk, jazz, soul, electro, even theme tunes into the mix. So that’s what we’ll be doing on this show.
Reaching Out beyond music. We’ll want to get musicians to talk about the news, philosophers to talk about music, poets to talk about education. We hope that by doing this we can offer something worthy of a couple of your hours on a Sunday – where we hope you’ll hear something you’ve always loved along with something you haven’t heard but might love.
